RHPL Announces Reinstatement of Holds Service

Richmond Hill Public Library reinstates holds service following a two-week suspension; suspension was introduced after Southern Ontario Library Service saw significant budget reduction

13 May 2019

Key Update:

Richmond Hill Public Library is pleased to announce that effective today (Monday, May 13, 2019), the Library has reinstated its holds service for customers.

Background:

On April 11, 2019, the 2019 Ontario Budget was tabled in the provincial legislature. The following day, the Southern Ontario Library Service (SOLS) was informed by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport that its operating grant would be reduced by approximately 50%, and that this substantial cut must be absorbed in the current 2019-20 fiscal year.

As a result of these cuts, SOLS announced that their delivery courier service ceased to operate effective Friday, April 26, and that its Interlibrary Loan service has been suspended until at least May 31.

This decision significantly disrupted all workflow tied to the Library’s interbranch delivery service, which was made possible through SOLS.

Following these sudden changes, the Library was forced to introduce temporary measures to mitigate the effects tied to the loss of the interbranch delivery service, which included a two-week suspension of its holds service while an alternative solution was identified and implemented.

Impact:

The Library has found a local delivery alternative to replace SOLS’ cancelled interbranch delivery service, which will allow for items placed on hold to be delivered across the Library system to all branches.

With a solution in place, Library customers will see a return to normal service across several key areas:

  • Library customers can once again place holds on all physical materials in the Library’s collection
  • Customers have kept their place in their holds queues for items they’ve placed on hold
  • New materials will once again be sent to all Library branches

The Library would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while a local alternative to replace SOLS’ cancelled interbranch delivery service was identified and implemented.
