Volunteering at RHPL

Are you a high school student looking for a volunteer opportunity?

NOTE: All RHPL locations are currently closed due to concerns related to COVID-19. We are not accepting volunteer applications at this time. 

There are many volunteer positions available for teens at Central Library, Richmond Green Library, Richvale Library and Oak Ridges Library.

Please note: Due to the high volume of applications, RHPL volunteers must be a high school student, and must either live in Richmond Hill or attend high school in Richmond Hill.

Volunteer Positions

Reading Buddies

What: Read and play literacy-based games with kids!
When: Year-round
Where: Central (During the school year), Richmond Green (year-round) and Oak Ridges (year-round)

English Mentors

What: Lead our Summer English Speaking Club for Newcomer Youth. You should be a long term resident of Richmond Hill who has grown up in Canada. Or, provide administration and technical support as an Admin Assistant.
When: August only
Where: Central

Homework Help Buddies

What: Teen volunteers will be partnered with a newcomer student in Grade 4/5/6/7/8 and help them with their homework during weekly meetings that last an hour each.
When: During the school year
Where: Central

Local History Project

What: Teen volunteers work as a team with a librarian to conduct research around a broad topic. The intention of the project is to narrow the focus and pull sources and content from the Library's local history collection to share with the public in a series of displays in the fall.
When: Summer
Where: Central

TAG: Teen Advisory Group

What: Discuss ways to make the Library a great space for teens. You must work well in groups and commit to attending meetings at the Library every other Saturday afternoon.
When: During the school year
Where: Central

On-Call Volunteers

What: Help out in the Library from time to time on an on-call basis. Assist with puzzles, prepare crafts or help out at special programs and events. Teens will be contacted by email when help is needed.
When: Year-round
Where: Central, Richvale, and Richmond Green

STEAM Coaches

What: STEAM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math! Work with students and children to learn emerging technologies like 3D printing, virtual reality, green screens, app creation software, digital design, coding, and LEGO robotics.
When: Year-round
Where: Central

Library Maker Crew

What: Become a master event planner with our Library Maker Crew! You will help the Library create a wide range of public programs from start to finish. Each session brings new projects to complete so things will always be fresh!
When: Year-round
Where: Richmond Green

Tech Tutors

What: Be part of our Computer Buddies program that pairs you with an older adult to teach basic computer, Internet, and email skills for one hour a day on selected weeks throughout the year. You must be patient, understanding, and have excellent communication and computer skills.
When: Year-round
Where: Central
