Fines for Overdue Material

Richmond Hill Public Library is a fine-free library, which means we do not collect fines for overdue items. Other fees, like replacement costs, may still be charged to customers.

If there are no fines, why am I receiving overdue notices?
While you won't receive fines for overdue items, you'll still be expected to renew or return your items to the Library when they are due. By returning your items, other community members will also be able to enjoy the book, DVD or another item you've checked out.

Why can't I renew my item?
You may not be able to renew your item if another community member has a hold on it, or if your library card is expiring soon.

What if I don't return my item?
If you don't return your item after it's been overdue for four weeks, you'll be asked to pay replacement fees for the item as well as a processing fee. You also won't be able to use your library card until the costs are paid or the item is returned in good condition. If the item is returned in good condition, these fees will be waived.

Overdue notices

As a courtesy, the Library offers email notification to customers regarding materials coming due. Customers are responsible for returning materials on the due date whether or not email notification has been received.

Renewals can be made online through My Account, or by calling your local branch. Items with holds cannot be renewed.

If you owe replacement costs and/or outstanding fines under $25.00, your account privileges will not be affected until your library card is due for its annual renewal. At this point, you'll have to pay all existing monies before renewing your library card.

If you owe more than $25.00 in fines and replacement costs, your account will be blocked and you will be prevented from accessing many of the Library’s services. Customers will be notified when their account reaches $25.00 or more.
